Week of Feb 27-Mar 2

Writing: As we are reaching the middle of the year, we are starting to focus on correct writing such as correct punctuation, spacing between words, and writing on the correct lines depending on upper case and lower case letters. Give your student a topic or question to write a sentence about. All the students are at different levels. If your child can sounds out and write sentences independently push them to write two sentences for their response. If they are still at the stage of needing you to sound out the words they want to write for them, that’s ok as well. Say the word slowly and let them write down the sounds they hear. While many kids want the word spelled perfectly, it’s not about that at this point. Many of the students are still at phonetic spelling which is right where they should be.

   *  Our new sight word for the upcoming week will be “and” Please continue to practice and review previously learned sight words. .

Here are some says to help your child review the sight words.

*     Write simple sentences using the sight words, or have your child write them.

 *   Take turns reading letting them fill in the sight words
*       If your child already knows the sight words, please work on spelling them.

*        A great game to play is sight word memory or sight word bingo. To make the memory game just write the same word twice and flip all the cards over with the words we’ve learned and play memory!

*Letter of the week: We will be continueing word building using the “us” family and previously learned word families.

*          Please practice correct letter writing. Such as saying, “where do we start our letters” they should say “at the top”. Of course lowercase letters start on the dotted middle line.

*          Please really focus on them taking their time writing and doing their letters the correct way.

Math:

*        This week for math we will be starting chap 15 which focuses on showing 2 parts of a whole. Please practice this at home as well.
*     Also, please continue to practice writing the numbers the correct way. While they may know how to write them the correct way, it is very easy to write many of the numbers backwards. The more practice they have the less frequent they will write them backwards. Many of the kids struggle with number recognition especially with the “teen” numbers please work on this at home as well while we do in the class.

Thematic Unit:

*       This week we will be focusing on a new unit called “Famous People” With so many famous people unfortunately we are not able to learn about all of them. Your child has been given a famous person report that they should be completing this week to present in front of the class. In class we will be focusing on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington and Abe Lincoln.

      Announcements:
·       My last day: My last day is scheduled to be on February 29th which is a Wednesday. My due date is March 3rd so if all goes as planned and the baby does not come early on Thursday March 1st the long term sub will start. Her name is Lauren Maloney. She has subbed around the school this year and does hold a teaching credential. She has taught previously in mainly 3rd and 4th grade. I will be meeting with her over the next couple of weeks and getting her familiar with each of the students. The school and I am confident that this will be a good match the  8 weeks I will be gone. Please let me know if you have any questions.
·       Famous Person Report: Over break your child was assigned a specific famous person. You should have received a letter home the Friday before break explaining this assignment. It is an actual homework assignment and if it is not returned they will serve detention for it.

·       Parking: When you pick up your child please be sure not to park along the street of the school. Sac PD is starting to ticket cars for being parked there.

·       Dr. Seuss Day Friday March 2nd is Dr. Seuss Day. Unfortunately I will not be there to participate in all the fun activities planned out for the kids. Thank you very much to Eve Shelton for putting together the list of all the volunteers we will need and making sure all food and activities are covered. Thank you to all the parents as well who stepped up to volunteer to make this day fun for the kids! I know they will enjoy it.
